OverviewMicrofinance is recognized as an effective development intervention in improving the livelihoods and reducing the vulnerability of poor and low-income people. While the gap between the supply and demand for microfinance services is huge, the main constraint is the lack of capacity in operating sustainable institutions, not the lack of funds.
To address the constraint, WBI, ADBI, the Tokyo Development Learning Center of the World Bank, and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) are in the process of delivering a series of MFTOT courses through the Global Development Learning Network (GDLN) and will prioritize the countries which need capacity building in the area. The first activity took place on August 3, 2006, and was a blended distance learning course which combined e-learning and video conferencing. There were Distance Learning Courses (DLC) in China, Japan, India, and Vietnam.
