London Conference on Afghanistan

Begins:   Jan 30, 2006 09:00
Ends:   Feb 01, 2006

The United Kingdom will host the London Conference on Afghanistan, to be co-chaired by Afghanistan and the UN, on January 31 - February 1, 2006.

The conference has three aims:

  • To launch the Afghanistan Compact, the successor to the Bonn Agreement. The Compact provides the framework for international community engagement in Afghanistan for the next five years. It sets outcomes, benchmarks and mutual obligations that aim to ensure greater coherence of effort between the Afghan government and the international community.
  • To provide an opportunity for the Government of Afghanistan to present its Interim National Development Strategy to the international community. The strategy will set out the Government’s priorities for accelerating development, increasing security, tackling the drugs trade, and strengthening governance.
  • To ensure the Government of Afghanistan has adequate resources to meet its domestic ambitions and international commitments.
